Tip1 Knight as spotter (general)
At the beginning of the game many areas are covered the so-called Fog Of War (FOW).
The knight is the only figure you can control directly. Thus you can explore the country, by sending the knight to unexplored territories. If the knight gets onto a cargo ship, he can explore unknown
Tip2 Uncovering the FOWs without knight
A particularly smart possibility to uncover the Fog of War (FOW) without using the knight as spotter is to set the trees and stones along the FOW to high priority.
You will uncover these parts of the FOW if lumberjacks are trying to harvest these resources.
Tip3 Settling down on new islands
As some islands may provide richer resources, you should consider to settle there. If you only have a few cargo ships available, set the type of units which can use the ship in the information dialogue of the ships to the craftsmen.
First you should build a warehouse, afterwards establish further structures.
Tip4 Equip your carriers with wheelbarrows!
You do not have to wait till you are able to manufacture wheelbarrows in your joinery, just get some by the flying dealer and distribute them to your carriers. Although the price of the barrows is very high, particularly at the beginning of the game when you don't have too much money left, it's very useful, as the capacity of your carriers increases greatly which allows you to expand very fast in a short time.
Tip5 Provide your habitants with enough territory!
The more dwellings your habitants are provided with, the higher the birth rate.
Tip6 Provide goods for both production and consumption
Think of the trade! If you have a bakery and a farm, produce a grain surplus. You can then exchange the surplus grain for other goods. Also the sale of elixirs is very profitable.
Tip7 Exchange large quantities!
Do you want a large quantity of a certain good? If it's not imperative for you to get it immediately it's wise to wait till you are able to exchange a large quantity at once instead of exchanging small quantities. After an exchange, the value of goods changes due to the laws of supply and demand.
Tip8 Make several offers!
Make several offers but do not finalise the trade, even if the flying dealer wants to do so.
If the flying dealer has accepted any offer you submitted, you can use this later on - this could have a positive effect if the value of goods changes to your favour!
Tip9 Mission target "Donation to an opponent"
The term "give" proved misleading. You have won the mission as soon as the opponent has the required quantity of goods in his warehouse.
The problem is, that the opponent will consume his goods. If you don't give him the whole quantity at once he will distribute the goods to his habitants. As a result the player never will have enough goods in his warehouse and you will win the mission!
Collect all goods you have to donate to the opponent and give it to him all at once.

Tip10 Lure your enemy to an ambush!
An ambush is particularly effective against hostile knights. Move away from the hostile knight your. If the hostile knight pursues you, then you can lure him lure to where your guardsmen and knights are waiting.
Tip11 Always attack the knight first!
Make sure you attack a hostile knight during a fight, if you defeat him, his supporters will also die.
Tip12 Use the zoom tool during a fight.
It is easier for you to use the zoom tool to select the enemy units you wish to attack.
Tip13 Take your guardsmen to offensive units!
Build a guards tower near the building which you want to attack and provide it with lots of guardsmen. If the guardsmen are patrolling, hostile units will attack them. This tactic is especially suitable for an attack to enemy stone walls, if you additionally support your knights with guardsmen.
Tip14 Make sure your researchers are as cheap as possible
Some researchers require less money for the same work.

Tip15 Climb to a new step of development
You should consider the following things in climbing to a new step of development:
  • Make sure that you have sufficient market places in order to supply your village
  • Make sure you have the luxury goods in your warehouse that you need for the next step of development
  • Make sure that all habitants have a roof over their heads

Fog of War (FOW)
FOW is the black cloud covering the view on sections of the playing field. As soon as a unit gets into such an area it will be uncovered.

FAQ3 How do I send the "crash.Log" file to JoWooD?
If The Nations crashes, a file named "crash.log" is created automatically in your "The Nations" directory. Please send this file to the following email address: hotline@jowood.com
FAQ4 Installation is not terminated completely?

Unfortunately the progress display of the installation for The Nations supplies
incorrect data. As the installation program is not a JoWooD product we are not able to rectify this problem directly. Let the installation run for a few minutes, even if there seems to be no progress - the installation should be completed successfully.
If the installation was not completed, then your CD drive has compatibility problems with the copy protection. In this case you should proceed as follows:

If you have another CD drive available, please try to install again using your other CD drive. If not, or if the installation could not been completed at your second try, please use the following procedure:
Ensure that your hard disk has at least 850 MB free memory space.
Copy all files of the Nations CD to a file on to your hard disk. Now try to start the installation from the hard disk (set UPexe) - the installation should be completed correctly now.
If you want to delete the files copied to your hard disk, please follow the same instructions as described in the "My CD drive is too loud" section by installing the music & video files in The Nations file, after that you can delete the files copied without any problems.

Note: You will still need the CD for playing, if you did install from the hard disk. Leave the CD in the CD drive, when you start the game.

FAQ5 CD Key input incorrectly?

If you entered the CD Key incorrectly please download the program setCDKey.exe available on our homepage in the download section. Start the program setCDKey.exe. Input the correct CD Key and press the button labelled: "save". If you do have any problems with this procedure, please re-install the game.

FAQ6 My CD drive is too loud?

The following process will rectify all compatibility problems between CD-drives and the copy protection. Please download the tool "copyMusicArchive.exe" from our homepage available in the download section. This program installs the music and video files to your hard disk in The Nations directory.
Note: For the installation of the music and video files at least 125MB free memory space is needed.
Another possibility to lower the noise level is to use one of the several tools available on the Internet. These tools are available for nearly all 'current' CD drives.

FAQ7 I start the game for the first time, but the intro doesn't play?

Insert the CD into the drive from where the game has been installed and try to start the game again. If there is still no intro then please install the game one more.

FAQ8 I start the game for the first time, but I do not hear any music?

Insert the CD into the drive that you used to install The Nations and try to start the game again. If you still hear no music then please re-install the game.

FAQ9 Game is generally running extremely slowly?

Check if your PC meets the minimum hardware requirements indicated on the box.
Check the fragmentation of your hard disk and the virtual memory settings in the system settings. (you'll find more information on this in the Windows-Help).
Otherwise your CD drive might have problems with the copy protection. Such problems particularly occur with some DVD drives and external burners. Install the music & video files to your hard disk as described in "My CD-drive is too loud".

FAQ10 After the intro the message "game runs in the software mode" appears, after this the game does not continue?

Please ensure you have installed current drivers. See installation of drivers.

FAQ11 The Game crashes after the intro?
Please re start your PC after installing the game, do not start it right after the installation. Did you install the latest patch? If you have a motherboard with via-chip, make sure you have installed the latest Via 4in1 drivers.
If the game still crashes after the intro, it may be due to the incompatibility between the CD drive and the copy protection. Follow the points covered in "my CD drive is too loud" copy the music and video files on the hard disk. If the game still does not work, try to deactivate the
Direct3D-acceleration.
One of our users with a A7V133 Motherboard reported, that he changed the settings in his Bios under Advanced - > as well as chip Configuration" to "disable" and the "video MEMORY Cache mode" from "USWC" to "UC".
FAQ12 Mouse pointer disappears?

Change the settings of the graphic card (in the Windows system control), deactivate the antialiasing of graphic card.

FAQ13 After the installation of the first patch "The Nations" seems to be slower?
Some systems have problems using the DirectX AGP surface acceleration, this won't be used after installing the first patch.
You can activate it again with the tool "setRegTroubleAGP" available on our homepage in the download section (if there are no system problems with it)

FAQ14 The Nations crashes before/during the intro movie
A few players, especially some with VooDoo graphics cards, cannot start the game correctly. It crashes before/during the playing of the intro movie.
You can follow these Instructions to bypass the movie and play normally:

- Get the file "user.reg" from the download area of our homepage
- Execute "user.reg" by doubleclicking on it
- When asked wheter you want the information to be added to the registry, choose 'Yes'
- The game will now start without playing the intro. You can create a new user, and delete the automatically generated user Jim after doing so.

How does this procedure work? The Nations will play the intro movie whenever starting The Nations as long as you haven't created a user yet. Once you create one, it will not play the intro any longer (except for starting it from the main menu). The file "user.reg" simply creates a user named "Jim" for you. Once you've created your own user, you can delete the user "Jim".
